Cassandra DesJardine
BA Hons., BSW, MSW, RSW

My name is Cassie, and I am a social worker/psychotherapist, registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social workers (OASW).  I completed my Master of Social Work degree at McMaster University in 2000.  I also hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree (1999) and Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology (1997) from McMaster.

I have over 22 years of experience providing counselling services to youth, caregivers and families within a community mental health setting.  For many of these years, my focus of work has been with young people struggling with anxiety, depression, emotion dysregulation, and self-injury.  My role also focused on completing assessments with youth at risk for suicide, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Over the past 14+ years in particular, I have had the opportunity to specialize in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders.  I am passionate about helping people affected by eating problems and related mental health issues.  I am aware of how hard it can be to break free from the grip of an eating disorder.  I also understand how challenging it can be to access treatment in a timely manner due to limited available services. Unfortunately, these factors, along with a lack of understanding and stigma that exists around this illness, can be deterrents to seeking help.

I work with adolescents and adults of all ages, and have a special interest in working with transitional-age youth (16-24) who face unique stressors and needs as they launch into independent living, and navigate post-secondary education and/or the work world.  These young people sometimes find themselves 'lost in between' children's mental health and the adult system.  My hope is to offer service that helps to bridge that gap.

My Approach

I have been told that my approach is calm, caring and down-to-earth.  My style tends to be conversational while remaining purposeful. I view the therapeutic relationship as collaborative - a team effort.  I tend to be curious - seeking to understand your experience without making assumptions.  Coming from a strengths-based approach, I am always listening closely for examples of inner resilience.  Oh, and I also welcome humour (because sometimes we need some relief when tackling the tough stuff!).

I have training in, and experience with various evidence-based treatment models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Narrative Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness.  I am trauma-informed, and can tailor the therapeutic approach to meet your individual needs.

With regard to eating issues, my experience includes supporting individuals at every stage of recovery:  from early concerns related to body-image and self-esteem, to outpatient follow-up service post-discharge from hospital-based treatment; and everything in between.  I have extensive experience working collaboratively with other professionals involved in the treatment process, including family physicians, pediatricians, dietitians and other mental health professionals.

Choosing a therapist is personal, and it is important that you find someone you can trust and feel comfortable with.  If you would like to learn more, or to get a better sense of whether or not we would be a good fit, please get in touch.
